AMON AMARTH: New Album Title, Release Date Revealed
November 30, 2010Swedish Viking metallers AMON AMARTH have set "Surtur Rising" as the title of their eighth studio album, due on March 29, 2011 via Metal Blade Records. Frontman Johan Hegg told Terrorizer magazine, "Obviously, the songs are going to be AMON AMARTH — that's what we've always done — but we wanted to put a little more edge to our sound, so hopefully that's going to come out after the mixing and everything. We've laid down ten tracks, and as is usual for us, every one of them is going to end up on the album."
The drums for "Surtur Rising" were recorded at Park Studios in Stockholm while the rest of the instruments are being laid down at Fascination Street Studio in Örebro, Sweden.
Surtur is a jötunn, a giant in Norse mythology; according to Wikipedia, "Surtur is foretold as being a major figure during the events of Ragnarök; carrying his bright sword, he will go to battle against the Æsir, he will do battle with the major god Freyr, and afterward the flames that he brings forth will engulf the Earth."
AMON AMARTH's seventh full-length album, "Twilight of the Thunder God", sold more than 11,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 48 on The Billboard 200 chart.
"Twilight of the Thunder God" was recorded at Fascination Street and features several high-profile guest appearances including ENTOMBED singer L.G. Petrov (on "Guardians of Asgaard"),CHILDREN OF BODOM guitarist Roope Latvala (who shreds a fierce solo on the track "Twilight of the Thunder God") and Finnish cello metal band APOCALYPTICA (a guest appearance on "Live For The Kill").
